Plex and Sonos have not been helpful supporting a solution they have both put forward. I loaded the Plex app onto my Ipad tablet and I couldn't get it to play via the USB or HDMI outputs - it just gave me a message saying I'll need to upgrade if I wanted to hear it on my Ipad (it may have wanted send music files via the internet from the NAS to the Ipad, rather than over the LAN).

And I wouldn't like to move my tunes to the cloud, I would prefer to leave them on my NAS. You're likely on the right track in that Plex stores all its metadata on their server(s), so the internet is involved in playing files via Plex (as opposed to Sonos), adding levels of complication. I've been rooting around on Plex and Sonos forums, so far I've manually set the ports to 32400 for Plex, and that hasn't solved the problem. HELP! Maybe our resident Sonos expert can shed some light on this. I know the connections are good because I can listen via the USB or HDMI when using other media management software on the NAS. I can play them on the computer I used Plex to select the album from the NAS, but I can't find any way to configure the Plex software to select either the USB or HDMI as output. When I play albums just using Plex, they appear with full album art. The first cut appears to be playing for a few seconds, and then an error message appears. When I call up the Plex data, I can't see album art, and when I try to play an album, no music is heard. Essentially, Sonos will give you the option to select Plex instead of other folders on your NAS or computer. Sonos is supposed to integrate with Plex, giving a solution to the Sonos file limit by using the Plex metadata instead. This is a media server software with a lot of features, including building its own metadata base for your music and movies. This device is the QNap HS 251+, and it comes with Plex. This device is now connected to my home network via cat5, to a DAC via USB, and to a preamp (with its own DAC) via HDMI. I found it because I was looking for a silent NAS to sit alongside the rest of the stereo equipment in my living room. There is a solution I've run across, and it's Plex. There are solutions like getting rid of your Sonos product, but I like using it and don't want to get rid of it. What this means is that any new songs added to the Sonos list will bump off an equal number of existing songs, and you won't know which ones (at least I don't know).

Sonos has a 65,000 song limit and I've passed that now.
